Depending on the type of
ceiling you are looking to spruce up, will determine how much repair
preparation you will need. Depending on how much if any moister your plaster
will be coming into contact with will also play an important part. Are you
working with low ceilings or high vaulted ceilings. These factors will play a
part in determining how much prep you need and will also give you an idea as to
whether or not a plastered ceiling is the best choice compared to something
like tin ceiling tiles.
If you are preparing a
wall or ceiling that has large holes in it then obviously you will have to fill
them in or repair them someway prior to attempting to cover them with plaster.
A quick fix is to place some sort of thin paneling into the whole that will
cover it completely. Then you can just glue it in place. Don't worry it will
never be seen by friends and family. Once glued into place, you can begin to
apply spackling to its under area. Once the spackling is in place, you are
ready to apply plastering. Just be a little bit more careful when applying to
this particular area because you do not want to dislodge the paneling from the
glue while applying the plaster.
If you have just some
small whole less than the circumference of a baseball, then you can do the same
or just start filling it in with spackling. If you try this method, you may
want to apply 2 to 3 coats of spackling before finishing the ceiling with
plaster. The numerous coats of spackling will ensure that the hole has been
filled.
If you have some sort of
leaking coming from your ceiling then you may want to have a professional come
out and fix the leak because water will damage the finished plastering and you
do not want your custom design to go to waste. Depending on how much water is
coming through and reaching your ceiling will determine the cost of the repair.
This is where handymen come in handy.
The most important act
that needs to be performed are those mentioned above and making sure that the
plaster is applied evenly on a flat surfaced ceiling. If you have waves or
uneven areas then it will help the outcome by adding some spackling in those
areas because one the plaster is applied, the uneven areas will show. It may
sound like a lot of work the prepare for the application of a plaster ceiling
so if you are not able to fix these small problems you may want to choose a
ceiling type that will cover imperfections and provide a designer look at the
same time.
