Casement Windows: What They Are

Casement windows are windows that open and close like a door, which swings open and closed by its hinges. The main parts of the window are the frame, hinges, and a crank which is the handle which controls the mechanism to open and close. The window can be hung or installed on the left or right to open out.

A casement window can be one that swings inwards or outwards; however, people tend to avoid the type that swings inward due to space concerns. Those that swings inwards tend to take up more space on the inside, so a small room can easily become even smaller. Plus, it is more difficult to decorate the place with an inward style because the window becomes an obstruction, so if an owner would like to put window coverings like blinds, sheers or draperies, this cannot be done unless the window is always left open. On the brighter side, they are much easier to clean since you will be able to reach both sides of the glass without needing to stretch.

Casement windows that swing outwards are more popular for the reason the inward style is unpopular for. In fact, they not only safe space, but because of the design that opens wide at an angle, even if the window is located at an area with minimal ventilation, wind can be directed into the building instead of flowing past the window. However, they are not as easy to clean like the one that swings inward, but later designs have made it possible to swing the glass so that one can easily clean both sides.

Although they are not as popular as they used to be, there are many replacement casement windows available in different materials, styles and colors. Some of the materials one can find are wood, metal, aluminum, vinyl, and fiberglass, which have their own advantages and disadvantages. They each give a different look to the window for different styles. And although back then cranks were very obvious and aesthetically out of place, some of these handles use lever styles instead that some may approve of instead. Nevertheless, because of the crank mechanism that is easy to use, this type of window works best with hard to reach places like above the cabinet or countertops. Many replacement casement windows are made available as there are people who prefer the benefits the window brings.
