Basement Ceiling Options

Basement Ceiling

When renovating a basement the ceiling will be a big part of your decision process, because it's an important aspect of the room. Usually, there you'll find exposed pipes and wires, so if you consider using the basement as an actual room, try to get past this obstacle. Even if it doesn't look good, there are a lot of ways and products that can help you with your problem.

The basement is known to be a dark, cold room and usually when decorating, people want to turn it into a warm, cozy place. The ceiling can give a cozy look also and there are a lot of options. You only have to choose which one is the best for you. If you don't have experience in renovating basements, you have to take into consideration the types of ceilings before you get started. Mainly, there are two categories: suspended or dry-walled.

Dry-walled ceiling is not an easy method and requires a lot of effort. And if you don't have the special equipments you have to rent them or call a specialist. It's not very easy to be installed and can cause a lot of mess in the basement. However, if you choose to install a dry-walled ceiling, it will give your basement a professional look.

If you consider that your basement's walls are not long enough and you have a small room, then before installing the ceiling remove some pipes and wires and place them somewhere else. Ducts cannot be removed, but you can paint them and emphasize them with the room, using different materials and colors. Also, you can integrate the pipes in the design if you are worried that you won't have access to them after installing the ceiling.

Benefits of dry-walled ceiling: it's the perfect base for wood panels, it has non flammable qualities, gives a professional look, and it's not really expensive. Another method is installing a suspended ceiling. This ceiling is actually formed by metal bars with the shape of T letter, which are suspended upside down on wires. If you choose to install a suspended ceiling, you won't have any problem with moving the pipes, wires or even ducts.

Another thing is that the ceiling will have a flat look even if the joists aren't really straight. In addition, you will have access to the air system, heating and cooling, and the electrical systems. Furthermore, this kind of ceiling covers the unwanted noises from above and allows you to easily install sources of light. But be careful, because this suspended ceiling is not indicated to be used if you have a low basement, because it occupies a good amount of space. So if you have a low basement ceiling, use the dry-walled type.

Benefits of suspended ceiling: no pipes, wires or ducts removal, flat look without the joists being straight, access to air and electrical system, no unwanted noise. After learning about the types of ceilings, you can choose which one is best for you and install it in your basement. After that, you can get to decorative touches, such as flooring, accent colors, lighting, and furniture.
