Flat Finish Ceiling Plaster

There are a number ceiling and wall plasters on the market to choose from. Depending on your aesthetic needs, you are sure to find numerous types of plaster to fit your home's interior. There are smooth finishes, flat finishes, all the way to rough finishes. You can find just about any color imaginable or even have a manufacture customize a color of your liking.

One of the more popular types of plasters is the meoded plaster. Meoded plaster is very flexible in its application. It does not have to be applied any one particular way. It can be used on the interior and exterior of your home and can be finished in multiple ways. Some choose to leave their plaster slightly textured which gives a more rough look and appeal while others choose to go with a washed more colored flat look.
Preparation for applying this plaster is pretty simple. For an exterior application you can apply the plaster over a thinly coated layer of exterior paint matching the color of your plaster. The reason for the thin layer of pain prior to the plaster is to completely fill in any cracks and crevices that may not be covered or filled in by the plaster.

All of your surfaces should be cured and chip free which makes priming pretty easy. Your primer can be the first layer of paint mentioned above. Some choose to sand out any non-flat surfaces which is not mandatory if you are going for a rougher look. However, if you are going for the wet flat look, you will definitely want to sand down and rough or uneven places you can find. This may be a part that you want to higher a laborer for.

Once the wall, ceiling, or area is prepared you can apply your first coat of meoded plaster which may take about 4 to 6 hours to dry. If you are wanting to apply plaster to a wall, ceiling or any area for the first time, you will want to first apply some type of sealer prior to applying your plaster.

Now, your first coat of flat finish ceiling plaster should be applied in a joint compound fashion using your trowel to apply it in a level uniform fashion for the first coat. Let the first coat dry over night if you can. When you apply your second and third coat you can actually change application techniques which will allow you to go from a flat looking finish to a rough textured finish or even add a color wash if you choose.

If you are only looking to do your ceiling and the process of adding plaster seems to involved, you may benefit by installing tin ceiling tiles instead. They are much easier to install, come in hundreds of colors and finishes and are found with endless patterns pressed into them.
