- Wash your windows weekly, more in high season or if you are in a high traffic area. While this will be obvious advice to many, some retailers need to be reminded that this task must be part of regular store cleaning,
- Remove any fixtures inside which block customers looking in. Too often windows has spinners and other stands inside the window and a view of the store is blocked.
- Scrape off old stickers from windows -- Visa, MasterCard, Amex etc. All retailers take plastic today so why give over window space to stating the obvious?
- Remove posters and other window clutter. Let people walking past see inside - or are you embarrassed. If you are embarrassed, fix that and show that you are proud of your store.
- De-clutter the door, make it easily seen, easy to open and welcoming of shoppers.\
- Leave your store lit overnight so it is noticeable - this is free advertising!
- Have your value promotion, what you stand for, showing on the front window. Prospective customers need to know what you stand for. Change the window display regularly.
- Post your hours on the door. Let shoppers know when to come back and spend.
- Replace dead lights so your store looks maintained and well lit and use globes which make colour pop.
- Ask your customers what they like about the appearance of your business and what they would like to see change. Then, implement the suggestions.
- When you have been away from the shop for more than a day, make your first task a review of how it looks from the outside in.
- Next time you hire a new employee, ask what he or she would change about the window display. Or, assign your new employee to make the upgrades!
